a reed valve is what is used rather than a valve like you would find in a
car,,, they amount to a metal strip similar to a feeler gauge, it relies
on it own spring tention to seal an opening, there are intake and exhaust air
reed valves, and the metal strip just covers a hole in the head to allow one way
air flow depending on if it is intake (sucking fresh air in to be compressed) or
exhaust (pushing air into the supply tank),,,,,
the pic. above shows a reed valve block, and depending on which way it is
installed would determine if it were exhaust or intake,,,,, the metal strips
being held in place by the rivet/screw (two of them) are the reed
