Your right the distributor will be firing on the down cycle BDC every other
time and not on the up cycle TDC every other time as is mandnatory.  I stand
corrected the engine does care were the crank timing mark is.  The cam
timing mark can be top or bottom, placing the distributor in time or 180
degrees out.  I was trying to simplify it, pointing to the distributor being
out of time and got carried away thinking to hard about it!  See go with
your first inclination, I added the crank timing mark remark just before I
sent the reply after reading it over for errors.  (or if the timing mark is
at the top or bottom of the crank gear)  )-:   Thanks Dodger7998 for keeping

My initial remark was to short and to the point and  probably confusing.
ALRIGHT, The Engine doesn't care if the cam timing  mark is aligned at the
top or bottom of the cam gear, or if the timing mark  is at the top or
bottom
of the crank gear, (The Distributor Does!!) just  all four marks have to be
in alignment with NO margin of error.  That  said, the gears and chain were
designed to be set by using a straight edge  going down through the center
of
the cam bolt through the center of the  timing mark on the cam gear through
the center of the timing mark on the  crank gear then through the center of
the crank bolt.  Then install  the distributor at top dead center, or
pointing to #1 plug wire with the  wires installed on your distributor in
the
correct firing order  (ROTATION?), your engine now is in time.  Aligning the
timing marks  together this way leaves less margin for error as designed.
Timing with  the marks at the top of both gears makes it open to the
possibility of  being one tooth off and not realizing it unless you are
very
careful.
 
 
 
OK, Now, If you installed the cam gear with  the timing marks correctly
aligned with the straight line through the  center of both bolts and both
timing marks with the crank timing mark on  top also then install your
distributor at TDC, your distributor will be 180  degrees out of time, As I
eluded to in my first statement.  With the  distributor installed 180
degrees
out off time the engine can be made to  run with the symptoms described.
Nico I bet if you rotate your distributor  180d and reinstall it, it will
run
