62-63 used 2in shorter springs than 64-65s did or a 20 in distance from pin to bushing. That is why 4s & 5s that use a 22 in distance, need the spacer to compensate for the shorter spring length between the dowel or axle center & center of the front spring bushing to make the SS springs work. As MO stated less spring wrap up in front of the axle makes better pinion geometry I used the 3800lb on my 63 and of-course no spacers.
