Another tid bit Steve McQueen actually did his own driving the 68 Mustang
while chasing the charger. The Mustang did not have positraction (not that
it would have helped)

This is going completely off memory, so take it for what it's worth.  When I
was a director in the Mopar Muscle Club INt.  we had a big gathering on one
Sat nite during the Mopar Nationals, in which we showed the Original
Vanishing Point after the usual slide shows.  One of the guys did an
intensive research on the cars used in Bullit, Vanishing Point and Dirty
Mary/Crazy Larry.  I also read more about Bullit later, but can't remember
the publication.  As I recall the RT was indeed a Hemi, (which added to the
front heavy landings), while the 'stang was a 390.  Supposedly, the driver
in the mustang had an awful time trying to keep up with the Charger, even
after repeatedly trying to slow it all down, so the Mustang was massaged
with cam, intake, headers, ect.  They still had to slow the chase down
some.  That was the only car used and it was ofcourse destroyed.  I think
Vanishing point used 3 Challengers, with the one driven off at first being a
Hemi car, the other 2 stunt cars I don't think were Hemi.  (and ofcourse the
camaro that hit the 'dozers.)  Never did get any decent info on the Yellow
Charger in Dirty Mary Crazy Larry.  One destroyed obviously, but don't know
if there were multiple stunt cars.  
Atleast thats how I remember it, but it's been awhile now. :-(
