The high pricing is probably Duty & Import Tax's. I have Model Railroading friends that use to have brass items sent to me and I in-turn would ship it to them as an exchange no value item. {The feds will probably be knocking at my door shortly. (; } But the USPS its the best & least costly way to ship. I have no problem doing it or someone closer to the border might volunteer.
