I had a '64 300 years ago (should have been the same suspension as your Newport), and the previous owner had had the same difficulty then finding new front shocks. If I remember right, they're super short. The guy had modified the way the top of the shock mounts by welding a tube in that was attached to the front subframe at the bottom, and capped at the top, effectively moving the top shock mount higher and allowing you to use a longer (and easier to find) shock from an A-body. The shock was installed inside the tube from the bottom, and the top mounting bolt went through a hole in the top cap of the tube. Unfortunately I don't have the car anymore, and don't think I have any pictures of that part...
