Re: 1964 Dart GT - Disc Brakes (Was Mopar Red's 1962 Dart)

Hi Jason,

Tom has a great idea about the dual master cylinder, look on Moparts, Rick Ehrenberg who is the tech editor of Mopar Action usually lists new ones for very reasonable prices, usually much cheaper than everyone else, if you can't find his ad let me know and I will get in touch with him for you.

Hi Jason,

Yes, the parts Gary P described will work.
You will need additional parts as I described (Backing Plate, Spindles), Possibly a few more (Ball Joints, Tie-Rod Ends, Bearings, Brake Lines, etc).

You will want to consider change-over to a 2 Reservoir master Cylinder. This will require addition of a proprotioning valve, bending /installing brake lines, and some additional time to install them. This will aide in getting more of the braking power to the front-end.

You will want to consider putting new front-end parts when stiffening up the braking. If there are worn parts on the front-end, this added braking from front-end can cause failure. If you havent done so already, Tie-Rod Ends, Ball Joints, Idler Arm, or complete front-end kits are available from a couple of sources. I rebuilt my front-end with Poly-Graphite from PST about 6 years ago.

If you get the Disc's and Calipers from Gary,

Minimum, you will need backing plates for the disc's

Unless you have the heavy spindles, you will need them as well. If it is a /6 car you can most likely count on needing them. I think the way to tell is if If you have the 9" standard duty front drum brakes, you will need spindles.

You may need a proportioning valve as well, I'm not sure of your master cylindar setup.

Lester,

I have a pair of the 5 on 4 (small bolt pattern) Kelsey Hayes disc brakes for the A-body available; both front four-pistons calipers and used discs for $35 plus shpg.

You can rebuild the calipers for your early A-body; they are worth more than that for a core charge; just want to see someone that can use them.

Several ways to go for the front brakes. You can either find a set of Kelsey Hayes from a 66-72 A body (4 Piston) (Small bolt pattern 5x4) (Hard to find)

Front discs from a 73-76 A body (5 x 4 1/2) Not as hard to find Then you
will either have to change rear end or have two bolt patterns

Aftermarket brakes (Easy to find & probably most expensive)

Good Luck
