Re: Axle bearings- ring - pinion- 8 3/4

After the experience I had with green bearings I'll never use them again in a street car. They failed in less than 6,000 miles in a 66 Hemi Charger I owned. Here's a quote from the Auto Hobby Digest 8 3/4 axle guide:

"Green Bearing Company builds a bearing kit that replaces the cone-type wheel bearings. These are sealed roller bearing units that do not require end play adjustment, however they offer no side to side support, and fail quickly in street applications. These are drag race bearings only (the manufacturer even lists them under the "Racing" segment of their catalog). Green Part No. RP400."

And here's a link to the whole guide:

I finally obtained a 742 sure grip chunck 3:55 ratio. However it has set for so long that part of the ring and pinion is rusted in the teeth. I have looked for a new or used ring and pinion, but for some reason that ratio is hard to find-even new. Dumb question for you old hands, but just what are "green bearings" and what is the advantage over Timpkin bearings i could get from my local parts house?...................MO.........sw iowa
