RE: thumping sound in motor

I just came in from the garage and got under the car, I had my hand on the bottom of the oil pan but could not feel anything hitting it. Plus the noise was no where near as loud at the oil pan. Still sounds to me like it coming from the middle of the motor. I also pulled each plug wire off one by one and it made no difference on the sound.  Don't know where to go from here.                                                              Alex

Hi,
When I was 19 I rebuilt the 390 in my 70' AMX. Put it the car and drove
to the muffler shop with open headers (I was 19 remember!). When the guy
buttoned up the exhaust he lowered the lift and I started it up. There
was a loud thumping coming from the bottom end. I almost puked! He
lifted the car again and we listened. The noise was coming from the oil
pan. I was figuring on a tare down. But this old guy who worked there
came over with a rubber mallet. He smacked the back of the sump and the
oil pan popped, the noise went away. I guess I had caved in the bottom
of the pan while the engine was on the dolly. It's a long shot but worth
checking.
