Hi, When I was 19 I rebuilt the 390 in my 70' AMX. Put it the car and drove to the muffler shop with open headers (I was 19 remember!). When the guy buttoned up the exhaust he lowered the lift and I started it up. There was a loud thumping coming from the bottom end. I almost puked! He lifted the car again and we listened. The noise was coming from the oil pan. I was figuring on a tare down. But this old guy who worked there came over with a rubber mallet. He smacked the back of the sump and the oil pan popped, the noise went away. I guess I had caved in the bottom of the pan while the engine was on the dolly. It's a long shot but worth checking.
