They take about 2 qt system empty. I bet about 1 qt if your cylinders are not leaking. The funny noise is pump pumping air with fluid. That's why you need to let the system sit and have a cold one before you verify level, to let all the air work it's self out of the fluid. All the air in the system increases the volume of the fluid and gives false levels.
