My 65 FSM says to use Type "A" suffix "A" Automatic transmission fluid. When I had to top up my Dart's system, I used good ol' Dextron and has been working fine ever since.

I hope my obsessing on this isn't too annoying... I just hate to make "unrecoverable" mistakes, but I think I found an answer (may be not THE answer)last night I was playing "Mr. Science"since the Mystery fluid has no strong smell I decided to see how it would react...first I combined new brake fluid with new trans fluid in a cup.. it's like combining oil and vinegar... if stirred or shaken will emulsify, but remain separated otherwise (btw it does get kinda milky)in one container I combined the "Mystery fluid" with trans fluid, and in another container "Mystery Fluid" with brake fluidHere's a picture of the results http://www.frappr.com/?a=viewphoto&id=5591207&pid=10965003as soon as the "Gunk" hit the trans fluid it started to spread, and combine with the new fluid, when stirred it remain emulsifiedwhen the "Gunk" hit the brake fluid is floated on top, and remained separate, stirring got the 2 fluids to combine, but started separating within a few minutesConclusion is...I can't be sure the "Mystery fluid" is transmission fluid (probably is though), but I know it is compatible with transmission fluid. So either the manual is wrong, or someone switched to trans fluid at some point in time... and given the condition of the fluid about 40 years a go ;)let me know if you see flaws in this logic... if not I'm gonna take the plunge an use tranny fluid, and stop boring you guys ;)THANKS TO EVERYONE THAT WEIGHED IN! Bob 62pluckedchicken@xxxxxxxxx wrote:Ya know... not a bad idea...I have some index cards I was doing a "reality check" of a paint color for restoring my steering wheel... will it strip all paint (SEM) and howlong does it take...the other think that occurred to me.. it was brake fluid originally and was filled at some point in time with transmission fluid.. and that's why it's milky (I know water make brake fluid milky, will trans fluid dothe same?) any thoughts? 65 wrote:Instead of tasting, just dump some on a fresh paint job on your nicest car...if it peels the paint, its brake fluid. ;-)Just kidding!!! 62pluckedchicken@xxxxxxxxx wrote:with so many owners with tranny fluid in the top pumps,I wouldn't even question whether its brake or tranny fluid, but the 62 shop manual says brake fluid. It really has a brownish tint (the red must be from your browser) that'swhy I didn't know if it was dirty brake fluid, or tranny fluidhmmm.. i wonder if there's another way to tell the difference... so whatdoes brake fluid taste like anyway... just kidding ;) 65 wrote:Both my 'verts have tranny fluid.
