You kind of lost me on the bellhousing swap? I would replace the converter with a 2000 stall & a 3.91 ring and pinion. Now if gas prices are not to much of a concern (Not a daily driver) a 4.56 would be the ideal setup!! Have you tried colder plugs, advancing your timing or rejetting your carb? When you had your converter rebuilt did they ask you what application you were going to use it for? They could have rebuilt it for gas mileage and not performance, that would explain so slugish.
