With a large pair of vise grips grab the spring very tightly towards the outer end, leaving enough room for the clip, then use the vise grips as a lever. Might take a couple tries but it will work. Yes, that sounds more like it. I have a hole in the brake drum and a new coil spring that fits in and you have to stretch it toward the clip you're holding in the backing plate.

Seems like I am stretching them too far, making them bend and lose tension.
I will get to the auto parts store to order some more of these, then give another go.

From what it sounds like he might have the heavy duty system that the spring hooks on the shoe and engages a J hook that is attached through the backing plate. Not the type every one is describing with the straight pin and round clip that you sandwich the spring & 1/2 turn to lock. If so there is a tool with a funny looking hook on the end that you hook the spring and then the J
hook and twist them together.

just reach around the back of the brake plate and hold the little stud out
make sure it is straight place spring on stud place retainer on pust it on
too stud and watch the slot and turn very easy i have never had one of those
cupped tools  although  i am sure removing rusted ones the tool would help
