Re: 383 oil pan gasket choices

My thought was that once installed, no reason to take the pan off again like you might for valve covers. The thin coat of red RTV is to keep that oil film and dirt from getting on your pan.......................MO.......sw iowa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Casey" <dcasey@xxxxxxxxxxxxx>

I would use the rubber/steel gasket dry. As long as your pan isn't warped, this gasket should last forever and be reusable, so you don't want to get RTV on it. That's been my experience with valve cover gaskets of the same design, anyway. They were the last pair I ever bought. Anytime the valve covers come off, I just wipe the gaskets and surfaces dry before bolting them back on.

That rubber with steel core sounds like a dandy! I would use a thin coat of hi-temp red RTV silicone sealer--and flaten the bolthole "dimples"....................MO......sw iowa ----- Original Message ----- From: "Butch Edison" <waedison@xxxxxxxxxxx>

I'll have the steering linkage off my car pretty soon and would like to take the opportunity to change a leaking oil pan gasket. I see Summit Racing sells at least two types, one is fiber, one is rubber with a steel core. Appreciate any advice on choice. Also, does this gasket require a sealer? Thanks/ Butch /Ferndale, WA
