Hi Butch,I should have specified axles from 1965 and up. The earlier ones has a tapered shaft that held the drum assembly on with a nut and washer. That style axles have shims. The actual adjuster on the 65 and up axles is separate from the axle and is incorporated in the bearing retainer plate. In order to get it off the axle, you would have to press the axle bearing off. I see no reason why the axles couldn't be switched from side to side other than the fact of the left hand lug nuts should be on the left side of the car.

Steve, is that particular to the year of car? I thought the 62-64 cars usedshims for adjustment, so the axles are the same. My car had shims on both sides, the axles were the same side to side. I thought the newer cars ( 65 and up) used some kind of adjusting screws ( probably the wrong word for what they are),so the adjuster was on the right side. There was a single paint mark on one of the axles and writing on both of them. Does it matter which side the axle goes on? I did pay attention to the shims but not the axles. Can anyone help me?
