RE: 13's at last!

Don,

I feel the most important part of the shift decision is the gear split
or the RPM drop resulting from that split. If the split is so large it
drops the RPM range below the Max Torque point, it will cost you
ET. With a 3 speed trans, like a 727, you might find you need a
different shift point for 1 to 2 than you need from 2 to 3 based
on RPM drop and peak torque RPM's. Without having had your
engine on a Dyno, or your car on a chassis Dyno, it has to be done
via experimentation. If your split is so large your dropping below
the max torque RPM, you could go faster by shifting at a higher
rpm for that gear. Converse to that, short shifting could be a benefit
if the split is small enough that your coming in to the next gear
way above the torque curve. It takes lots of runs and experimentation
to get it just right.

I just read somewhere in the last couple of weeks that you should shift
10% over HP peak. In your case this would be 6600. Since you allow 500
for shift reaction time, this becomes 6100. (Wouldn't mind hearing some
opinions on those statements).
