Don, - I am glad you jumped in here. I am in total agreement. I refused to reply because I knew it would start a S&$^% storm. Earl Niko I know that is what it says but I ave actually done this 3 times with s no such problem. frankly I refuse to believe it. Here is why. A cmpany could not afford to build two different sets of axles for one rear end simply because the spacer was wider. Even a child would immediatley deal with the spacer ratherthan go to the expense of diferent axles.If all open rear ends are interdhangable then all posis are two Ie if you can put a 64 open diff in a 63 or 62 then there cannot be a difference. and it appears no one has ever said that it is not so. .I suspect that someone has had a problem once and not quite diagnosed it right or maybe not told the whole story. Often things are so. if the spacer is the same size then it can be done period and if on the unlikley event it isnt the same (and I say that only because i hae done this swap myself several times and have not had any trouble) then swappingthe spcer with the one from the open diff is only a few minutes work and after that it is done. call me stubborn or whatever but if I have actaully done something it it is hard to convince me that it cant be done. In fact Impossible. Maybe there is some oddball thing I havent seen but I had 391s in my 63 Dodge in the seventies and swapped the diff in this car for a 391 then a 355 . it was while doing the last one i decided to see if the autodigest thing was true. I measured all o had here , two cone type s three open onme of which is original to my car and my car isearly prof duction 63 (pre penestar on right fender) and they were all the same and yes I used a claipher set not a tape measure. So If you wanted to do this swap anybody. here would be the prudent method as long as doubt of any kind exists. measre the spacer in the removed origianl diff and measi ure the spacer in the posi going in. If they are different change them . takes about 10 minutes tops. too sj horten the axles ratherthan change the spacer or machine it if there was a problem seems to me like changing a light bulb by turning the ladder aprund while the man holds the bulb. I know , it just the way i think sorry. I just flat out hate4 compolcated solutions to simple probpes ans so far I have not seen this exact t problem as yet. even though I have had two fo these cars. I will go back in my cage now. I have been to the Fatherland so i may be a bit overcharged at the moment.
