no oil slinger

Well, I've taken apart two 1978 440's so far, one from a motorhome and 
one from a New Yorker.  Neither one had an oil slinger in front of the 
timing chain.  Anybody know what's going on?  I'm 99.99% sure these are 
untouched factory engines.
