carb problems

Hi all,

I have a Carter AVS on my '63 which I just put a kit in. I put it back
on today, and fired it up, and got a rough idle accompanied by a high
pitched squeal along with a hesitation immediately when breaking the
throttle off idle. After the rpm's come up, the squeal goes away, and
at higher rpm it doesnt seem to have this. I'm assuming a vacuum leak,
but can't pinpoint it. Any ideas?
BTW, this is a carb I had laying around, and before putting the kit in I
ran it on the car. Although it didn't run especially well, it had no
wierd squeals, and idled fine. Irronically, this squeal is the same
thing the previous carb had! I was advised then, that I probably had
worn shafts in the carb body, which was the reason for switching to this
carb. Right now I'm about 4 bolts away from throwing both in the
river.........
Sign me, discouraged in Iowa.
