Back in the late '60's I had a '63 Dodge Custom 880. It was formerly a California Highway Patrol Cruiser so it had a high performance 413 in it. I used to take it to the drags in Vacaville and Fremont California. I shifted it like a 3 speed with the push buttons on the dash. On this car the buttons were horizontal on the left side of the dash. Managed to get that 4500 lbs beast into the mid 15's with cheater slicks. It was pure stock. All I had done was raise the front end via the torsion bars to improve weight transfer. Also, I guess since it was a CHP cruiser, it would corner flat. Used to race a buddy in his '64 442 down the Feather River Canyon drifting most corners. Yeah I know.....I was young, stupid, and LUCKY!

Here's a really dumb question. I'll just ask it cuz you guys don't know me! ;-)It sounds like you racers are pressing buttons as you're making your pass down the track. Is that the case? Choosing your shift points like a manual?- Or is this only when you have installed a manual valve body in the transmission? I will have to fiddle with my car, to see how it acts in its stock configuration. My GTO had the Hurst Dual-Gate, and I always thought that it was a lame gimmick, since the cable did the same thing whichever gate you had the lever in. We have even installed a pushbutton in a altered because of its efficiency. My grey 63 with street hemi was so equipped and was perfect in use. We used the reverse pattern valve body in the 63 and i recarved the buttons accordingly to FIRST, SECOND (left the same as stock) and WIN. It really ticked off the non mopar guys.
