Brake splash shields necessary?

I used Rick Ehrenberg's brake swap guide to replace my old drums with
'73-up A-body discs a while back and I have a question. When I upgrade
from the current smaller rotors to the larger ones, do I really need the
splash shields for daily driving. I've seen some conflicting opinions,
but never any real resolution.

If I do need to run them, does anyone have a pair they don't need?

Regards,

Bob in Sacramento
