I have always placed the jack stands as close to the center of  each tire as 
I can, and have never had a problem, even on rust buckets IE  the jack stands 
under the rear axle, usually on the bottom of the shock mount  brackets, and 
the front on the bottom of the lower control arm, this places the  weight where 
it normally is when the car is sitting on the  ground
