Re: What's the coiled thing around brake drum?




Wow, I never thought of that. My 2002 Sienna could have used those. The rear drums would kind of hum on stops. I traded that turd in on a 2006, though.

That spring is there to absorb any harmonic vibrations
that could cause noise when you applied the brakes.
Most of the time they were unnecessary. But on some
cars they were! Several times at dealerships we spent
hours trying to resolve a customer complaint of brake
noises at a certain speed. It took a while before we
realized somebody had removed the springs from the
drums! We put new springs on - problem solved.
