Well, yeah, that'll throw off the results. Throttle's gotta be all the way open. Choke, too. Usually easiest to unhook the choke and the throttle return spring. If the engine's been sitting outside, especially if you are in any kind of a humid environment, then stuck valves and/or rings are definitely a possibility. You may want to pop one valve cover and take a look...valves stuck open are indicated by compressed springs with unloaded rocker arms (and sometimes dropped pushrods). Valves stuck closed are indicated by bent pushrods (d'oh!). In either case (stuck valves, stuck rings), a gallon of Kroil will often go a long way towards reviving such an engine.
