IMHO 8 3/4" is the way to go. Lighter than the Dana, but able to take as  
much punishment as you will likely ever throw at it with a small block. But  
beware, it is not QUITE the "bolt in" many claim it to be. You have to shorten  
your drive shaft, and the shock, and none of the axle mounting  hardware 
(U-bolts, etc. interchange) Since you have the old ball and trunion  trans, you will 
likely want to upgrade that too, the results being a drive shaft  that is 
almost completely fabricated, so choose your drive shaft shop  well.
