Unfortunately, I can't help you since I don't have the experience and knowledge, so I hope the "brain trust" out there can help you.
I know that when I was sitting behind the wheel during cam run-in, keeping
the rpm @2,200, my well-meaning buddy was watching the 2" TTis turning bright
red. Had I known that, I'd have done an immediate timing check. He claimed it
was at 34 degrees before startup, but that would only be true if he installed
the cam correctly. Later, I read in a magazine that a too-rich condition
could result in unburnt fuel traveling out header tubes, then igniting there,
causing the excessive heat I had experienced. So, there are two ideas on it.
Some tell me they shouldn't get hot enough to glow, others have told me that
it is normal for headers to run cherry red the first few inches.....so I only
have questions, not answers.
