I have seen it done on some of the early mopars but not chevys. Seriously its quite common in the late 70's to mid 80's (probably more years as well) to stick valves. (boat anchors)I have seen 350 chevs run pretty well with a stuck valve. Really depends on how far its stuck open. The only explanation I can give you is simply the engine configuration. The long crank (length not stroke) may have helped mask the fact that the valve was sticking open. Example, years ago a friend of mine has an early 50's boo-ick with a straight 8. the car ran wonderfully, but it seemed to lack power. After checking the usual culprits, (points, timing, tune up, carb, ect) we really werent coming up with anything. So, we tried a compression test, (thinking all 8 were low)well, cylinders 7 and 8 (back two) had ZERO compression. Let me reiterate, this engine ran soo smooth a glass of water set on the air clear wouldnt have vibrated. After a dissassebly, we found that the journals for 7 and 8 had NO RODS OR PISTONS and the bores were filled with some sort of grout/concrete mix. Depending on how far the valve stuck open, the cylinder may still have added to the output of the engine, but certainly not 100%. Sort of like "feathering" a wounded air plane engine. (prop type) Sort of a "planets all in alignment" scenario. Doc. Best i can come up with.
