What is the idle rpm in neutral? Could be set high enough to start the 
mechanical advance advancing in neutral,then when put into gear, rpm drops 
off and mechanical springs retard the timing ,thus lowering the idle speed 
even more.

vacuum gauge reads 16 at idle.  i originally had a vacuum leak at the base
of the carb, i fixed that hoping that was the problem, no luck.  i also dont
understand why i lose so many rpm when i put the car in gear.
