"Now, why the brake lights would be killed by a shorted dome light
fixture is something I didn't ponder over much. I just accepted it as
goofy."
"I can't say when they started doing it, but at some part in time all of
the manufactures started tying the rear lights of the car with the
inside,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,can't say which way for all models, but the idea
was that if you blew the fuse on the taillights, the interior light
would not come on and you would be aware of the problem, If memory
serves , the brake lights were connected with the interior lights, and
the tail lights were connected to the dash lights, both of which would
be noticed when not working and would alert the driver of the rear
faceing lights as not working."

Shortly after I got my '64 Belevedere I went to an evening cruise that
ended at 10:00 p.m. When I opened the door to leave, the dome lights
wouldn't work. I started the car and the dash lights wouldn't work.
Someone stopped me as I left the parking lot to tell me that I had no
tail lights. My buddy followed me home so no one else would hit me, and
my wife held a flashlight on the speedometer. I found that the previous
owner had installed a new brake light switch, and had a made a poor
connection, which worked apart. It interrupted the power source for all
the lights that wouldn't work that night.
