I'll be able to provide pictures in the near future. I spent all my money on
EFI, so I don't have a digital camera. I do know a few people with them
though.
So far the only tuning I've done is to set the fuel pressure and the timing.
Also, I have not yet driven it enough to get any kind of mileage numbers,
but you can be sure I will once I get my power steering issue worked out.
Now to the technical questions (I can provide more specifics to those
who want them, as very little of the work on this project was not done by
me. One question at a time though or I'll spend all day typing a response.)
My conversion is based on a 5.0 Mustang system. The computer is a
Mustang computer running a modified program. The harness was custom built to
fit the car, but is based on the Mustang wiring diagram. The distributor is
Mustang and was adapted to the Chrysler block. The intake is an Offenhauser
aluminum four barrel with provisions for injectors added. The fuel system
was built on the car. I used a Walbro inline pump and a Fram filter. (Walbro
makes pumps for Ford, by the way.) I had to modify the fuel sending unit to
add a return line to the tank. Fuel gauge still works and all that good
stuff.
Basically doing the conversion consisted of making every necessary
sensor and actuator from the Mustang system fit somewhere on my Polara, and
then changing the computer's program to compensate for things like the extra
120 cubic inches.
Things I did not include in the conversion:
1. Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) - I put the wires in the harness because
I hope to add it later, but for now, there's no EGR. Adding it later should
improve the mileage. In the meantime, I've told the computer that its got no
EGR to keep it happy.
2. Thermactor System (what Ford calls a Smog Pump) - The smog pump is used
in conjunction with the exhaust catalysts. Since I didn't and refuse to have
catalytic converters on my car, there was absolutely no reason to have a
smog pump on it either. The computer knows about this as well.
3. Evaporative emissions canister - most every car these days has a charcoal
canister at the other end of a vent line from the gas tank. This canister
fills up with fuel vapor while the car is parked. At some point, the
computer will open a vacuum solenoid and let the engine suck the vapors from
the canister. Thus the fuel vapors don't go into the atmosphere. As part of
this, the whole gas tank is maintained at 2 psi (ever wonder why they test
your gas cap with the emissions tests?). I've got better things to do than
modify my filler neck to take a Ford gas cap and run another line along the
frame to a charcoal canister. The wires are there but I'm venting through my
original vent lines for now.
4. Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) - The computer has the ability to determine
the car's speed from a sensor on the speedometer cable. It uses this to do
things like retard the timing at very high speeds, and to keep the RPM's up
a little when you push in the clutch and coast off the freeway so your
engine doesn't die. I plan to add this to my car eventually, but it is not
critical that I have one and its a good bit of work that I've put off for
now.
I think that's a pretty good rant for the time being. I've got a few changes
to make to my tuning tonight so I can try them out tomorrow.

Second the congrats of the good news to Dave. :-)
I'm hoping to get over to Dave's place before the end of this month.
If so, I'll bring my digital camera and snap a few pictures of the EFI's
Dodge for a feature.
Thanks,
Gary H.

Dave, congrats on your EFI! I hope Gary H. creates a feature for it on
the website, to see how you did it. I'd love to put port EFI on my
Fury! Please keep us posted on your progress.
