Neal, the 340 and all LA engines have the same lifter angle of the early (50's) Hemi's and Poly's that followed that followed the Hemi's. The angle was so the pushrods could come thru the cyl heads at the right angle for the early Hemi and later Poly heads. It was a straight shot on them. To make the engines more narrow and lighter they used the wedge cyl hd that everyone is familiar with instead of the Poly. Yes, you are correct that in the later race blocks it was corrected. Yes ,you are correct that it was not the most efficient ,especially due to the expensive and super heavy duty valve train needed for race engines. It was also corrected in the Viper and truck V-10's that were loosely based on the LA motors. I don't really think they expected to use the engine (LA) in performance applications when they first built it. Later when the 340 was needed to compete with other small blocks the cost of the change didn't justify it. Mike

so i was looking at my 340 block today and wondering why on earth did
they make the lifters pointing down instead of a straight attack at
the rocker arms. This creates an angle between the lifter and the
pushrod, doesnt seem too efficient. I believe the new R3 race blocks
  have corrected this.
the only idea i can come up with is they were trying to locate the
cam higher up in the block ( for some reason). But it seems like a
not so efficient idea, seems like it would create a bit more
friction with that angle in there.
I was just so upset by this discovery i took my 340 block out to the
lake and kicked it off the tailgate of my truck!
