Don - I've done the same type of thing, put in a part not designed for what  
I was using the car for and then buying "band aid" fixes to bring it back to  
where it should of been if I had bought the right part in the first place.   
My buddy had a set of deep deep gears in his car that ran 11's so I needed  
them.  Course he had a race 340 Duster and I had a bone stock 383 B  body.  Spent 
a lot on $$$!   Like they say, youth is wasted on  the young.
