The eaiest way to set the timing by ear is to run the engine to about 2000 rpm then adjust the timing untill the engine sounds the best. Works for me.

Long ago I didn't have a timing light and I took my 4 speed 383 '64
Dodge 330 post too a BIG hill. I took off up the hill and kinda lugged
it in high gear. I listened for it to complain,(ping), and if it did I
kept moving the dist till I could just barely keep it from pinging.
Seemed to work pretty well.

Regarding appearance; If my hood is up it's gonna be kinda noticeable
that I don't have a stock set-up(2x4's) so the more stuf the better on
the firewall, etc.. I'm gonna remove the under hood insulation, I hate
it, and paint it nice and display all the decals I can find, that
pertain, under there. Stealth is only for when the hood is down.
