My 1964 273 Barracuda has always had a seperate timing mark plate that bolted onto the front of timing cover with two of the water pump bolts. Therefore, it sound like you have the correct cover, but someone left off the timing mark plate/bracket thingy during a water pump change.

I need help. I think I am figuring out whats wrong with my 273- the
front of this /radiator/ waterpump/ timing case setup has all been
cobbled together with wrong pieces and I need to straighten it out.
In pre 70 273/318/340 ( LA) engines the timing mark is supposed to
be on passenger side. 70 and up its supposed to be on driver side,
with a corresponding switch in the water pumps outlet.
Heres problem #1 - the timing case on the engine has no timing marks
on either side! where did this timing cover come from? its smooth, no
raised boss with marks on either side!
Could this be a poly case somebody stuck on there, I know they
interchange, what was the timing mark setup like on a poly 318 case?
(Smooth? left /right? a mounted tab for marks???)
   Problem #2- BALANCE- so I found a 1967 318 in a junkyard.
Now that should give me the right timing cover(marks on
passenger-side) for my 67 273. Balance should be the same too as
the 67 318 was a steel crank like the 273.
So heres the question- if I take that timing case from the 318 , do I
also need the balancer from that engine? Or would the one on my 273
be the same? See I dont know if the balancer on my 273 was for a
passenger side or drivers side timing marked engine. AGGHHHH! What do
I do? Are there numbers on the balancers that will definitely iron
  this out?
   Shoot me now!
