I agree with the other responses.  I'd probably go through paypal and if they're set up for it you can use a credit card to pay as well.  Then you can fall back through the card company for resolution in the event of a problem.
 
On another note on this.  Be sure to discuss packaging in detail to insure the parts are going to come through shipment ok.  I bought some rocker panels for my 65 and despite some decent packaging they were really bent up by the post office.  The shame of it was that the sender had the best of intentions.  But if I had thought of it then insisting on some packaging with reinforcements (preferably some wood framing) would have probably been well worth it even if it cost a bit more to ship.

I am considering buying some hard to find parts for my '64 Sport Fury. I 
will be sending $400 to someone I do not know -- I only spoke with him over 
the phone a couple of times.

I believe most people are honest and I probably have nothing to worry about. 
BUT, what is the best way to handle this transaction? What form of 
payment should I use?
