David -
WOW, that is some fancy dash on your Bristol! Don't believe I've ever seen that before.
Engaging the park sprag does not "force" or move the tranny into neutral. I select N with the pushbuttons before I engage the park sprag. But I can't explain what keeps the R, D, 2 & 1 from engaging when the park sprag is engaged. It was that way when I
bought the car, and I have no connection to the restorer. I've never tried to engage the park sprag while a gear is engaged, but it doesn't seem like a good idea to even try.
I'm not trying to sell you on my set-up. I just know it works for me. My previous car (1963 Dodge Custom 880) had push buttons like my DeSoto plus the park slide lever beneath. I've seen some "custom" levers added after-the-fact that just look terrible,
but I guess they're functional. Sounds like you are on the right track for doing what's right for your sweet ride. Good luck.
Bill

Subject: Re: Welcome new member - 1964 Bristol 408
Bill, thanks but I still have a concern.
The reason is because I haven't been able to be sure yet how the 62 and 65 transmissions vary and therefore be sure that what works on a 65 will work on a 62. My only sources of information are websites and helpful owners like
you but here's what I think I know. I'd welcome any corrections that anybody can offer.
I assume the transmission would get damaged if it was put into gear with the parking sprag engaged. Wouldn't it?
The 62-64 transmissions with pushbutton shifters all had a park sprag with its own cable, separate from the cable that shifted the transmission. The park cable was not operated by any of the pushbuttons. Instead it was operated
by a separate lever which not only engaged the sprag but also forced the pushbutton shifter into neutral. The shifter could not be put back into R or D unless the park lever was moved to disengage the park sprag. So they avoided the transmission being in
gear while the park sprag was engaged.
The 64 model year was the last year for pushbutton transmissions delivered from the factory. The 65 and later models got column or console shifters with PRNDL patterns. The park sprag was still operated by a separate cable but
that cable was attached to the shifter and moved with the shifter. The transmission valve body gained a 'park' position too which just put the transmission in neutral. i.e. it was a second neutral.
So the 63-64 and 65 transmissions have a slightly different way to prevent being in gear while the park sprag is engaged.
Bill, your car looks like it has the original 1960 pushbutton shifter combined with a 65 transmission. I know you have that separate push/pull knob for the park sprag but I haven't worked out how your car's park knob is also
forcing the transmission into neutral when it engages the sprag. Do you know how it does that? Or can anyone else figure it out?
It's just that, if I have explained things correctly above, I could easily add a knob or lever to engage/disengage the park sprag on my 62 transmission but it would not force the car into neutral.
Regards
David
Hi, David -
The forward and reverse gear will not engage when the park sprag is engaged. I've had the car 4 years now, and it has worked flawlessly for me.
Bill
Gary, here's photo of my dash (right) and that of the next model of Bristol dash (left) which has the park lever. The later one's buttons resemble a 62 Dodge Dart. I think the shifter from one of those could be made to work although I suspect
the mounts for the shifter inside the dash are different.
Yes, all I have now is the parking brake which operates correctly but is pretty weak despite all my efforts adjusting it.
David
Thanks for the update David.
When you get a chance post a photo of the dash of your 1964, showing the pushbutton setup there.
Maybe we can figure out how to add a suitable park lever.
I am assuming you just use a parking brake for now.
Thanks,
Gary H.
