Re: 318 poly woes

Neal - Fully agree with all shared by Gary, Jason & Jim!

My 61 Lancer Slant 6 Wagon (became caretaker 10/07), didn't even have a timing pointer. Mechanically found TDC on #1 and made new timing mark on (cleaned & painted Red) Timing chain cover adjacent to Harmonic Damper Slot. (Made Crankshaft Damper ( Also Red) slot white..

After months of trying to get engine to run, discovered timing/ ignition issues: All 3 sets of New poorly manufactured points :Hole too tight at bottom, so points set not seating flat on plate, so rocked on pin- and intermittent spark; points cam too small, so not always opening points to spec; and bend at end of points not as original MOPAR stock.

So had to pull distributor to install Pertronix. After more months, still getting intermittent spark and dealing with timing adv & retard issues.

Found one issue was ground -Distributor to block contact.

Finally have spark on most cylinders, but not consistent all around the rotation.

Pertronix tests 'Seem' to be OK.
Wondering now if one or two of the NEW Spark plugs is defective- as that would explain,  while cranking, why with timing light on coil center wire, 4 flashes, then miss, then flash then no flash.

Lancer in my Quanset Hut on Virginia Tree Farm. Imperial in my Garage/ Workshop in Columbia Maryland.  In Maryland so working on Imperial- As shared, Mighty 413 firing smoothly on all 8, timing light 'appears solid light'.  Now repainted the 413 Mopar Blue Turqoise so the painted white timing mark on the crankshaft Damper is not quite at easy to see S the line on the Lancer Slant 6.

Always a lot to document FOR YOUR ENGINE when working on these Vintage Cars. Every one has its own 'Personality'.

Need to fire up the 270 Poly on my 56 Dodge once I get brake system rebuilt. Master Cyl died about 6 yrs ago, so will need to pull plugs, add more PB blaster before even thinking about cranking.  Did use fogging oil years ago. 56 waiting it's turn 'in the cue'.(9 MOPARS + a dozen others + 'Life')Life's.

Stick with it!

Highly doubt that its the chain.   If it was the chain the engine would barely run or have any power.   Put the timing light in your tool box.  Old engines have a bad habit of slipping the outer collar of the harmonic balancer.  So if you're the type of person who only sets timing with a light it's going to be difficult.   I would encourage you to abandon the light for right now.  At idle bring the timing up till the engine speed flattened out.  Then dial it back till the engine bogs. Just the slightest little bit.  Lock it down.   Take it for a drive.  This is the old school method of power timing.  Every engine I have ever worked with has had a slightly different tolerance for ideal timing.   I rebuilt my 440 3x for various reasons.  Each time with a different cam.  And each time desiring a different advance on the distributor.  If the timing is too quick on initial. It will crank hard when hot.   Just pull a little more timing out till it cranks satisfactory.   This is the way I set all my mopars and all I work on For others.  Once you find the sweet spot. Check it with the light.  You may have to make a new mark on the harmonic balancer it will be soo far off.   Now if you install a new harmonica then a timing light is a great tool.
My opinions have been shared here and may not be shared by all who read this.   That is ok.  This is the way I do it here in Indiana.

What would your guys guess be if you had to advance the distributor  quite a ways to get it to start?
Also if I set the timing at 10btdc in about twenty seconds it is at about 7 or 8 btdc.
Sounds like it could be a chain issue. But I want the pros opinions
