Re: rear end clunk

Well, I got the rear up on jack stands. when I
turn the drive shaft the wheels start turning
almost immediately and most of the noise
comes from the trans end of the drive shaft?
Moving out from under the car I grabbed the
rear wheel and turned it back and forth,
again creating noise from the trans that sort
of makes the drive shaft ring a little like a bell,
I hear that same sound sometimes when I put my car into gear
from neutral? But, when I pull straight out on the wheel,
with both hands, and push back it makes the dull clunk sound
I hear going around corners in wet weather. So,
is this an axle end play adjustment? can I get shims
to fix it? I also noticed an X cast into the case with a
couple dots one above and one below the X and
evidence of 2 yellow paint dabs on the bottom
of the carrier, nothing to indicate a sure grip, darn it.
Haven't pulled the filler plug yet, was wondering how
much gear oil should be in there and will any spill out
when I pull the plug with the back end of the car in the air?

thanks again for any light you can shed on this problem

Joe, It's a 741 case, has a 3.31 gear ratio tag, there's no indication
of it being a sure grip. I think one wheel spins backwards or the
opposite direction with the rear wheels off the ground and turning
the wheel by hand, It's been some time 3 maybe 4 years for the rear brakes.
I remember awhile back replacing one of the axle tube seals,
and there is a flange that was loose on top of the front part of the case,
I guess the pinion snubber with no snubber? There are some paint dabs
on top of the case I think that were yellow and white, I don't know how many
the 40 year build up of crud dose not wipe away easy, with out taking the paint with it.
Hmmm, I have not checked the fluid or gear oil level back
there in quite some time could this be the begining of the end for
the rear end? I would think a rear with no gear oil would over heat
and seize? think I'll take another look at it tomorrow is there
any thing to look for or checks I can make while I got it up
on jack stands, short of a complete tear down?
thanks
Schuyler

Schuyler - is it a sure grip? These can make funny noises when the clutches
slip when cornering. The wet roads may have something to do with not
letting the tires grip enough to gradually slip the rear clutches. Just a
shot....Joe
