there is a set of original unused maxwedge exhausts on e-bay for about $1000. they look beautiful. I had the same problem on my 440 with a set of old 60's headers because of the flange. it was a 3 part flange and had sealing problems from day one. the stripped out bolts on the head didn't help either. the pair i had was a little bent from laying around unused for 30+ years, in my buddys garage/storage, they fit great even with power steering but wouldn't seal. I opted for a set of doug thorley headers (about $120) off e-bay brand new, and now am only blowing gaskets at the collector. Ha HA HA. I think copper crush gaskets are the way to go down there. the one part flange really made the differance, and i've noticed that the bigger(thicker) the better on the flanges. I had one problem on both sets, the place for the header bolt/stud behind the #2 opening is real tight and had to be installed while putting the header on. the stock manifolds seal real good they are easy to get to plugs, and only need one or 2 of the special long exhaust sleeve bolts, but don't flow the same. you'd be better off using a set of the swept back HP manifolds for flow, but any set of stock manifolds will controle heat and noise better that a cheep set of headers. Ceramic coating IS worth the cost.

Sorry for the long post.

I'd like some opinions on headers vs manifolds on a mild 413 in a 64
Polara. I have an old set of headers that I can't get to stop leaking at
the head. It's probably a bent center flange, but I've had 4 different
sets of gaskets in it, both header and stock steel gaskets. What I'd
like to know is how much performance difference there is between the
two. Right now I have a used 413 4bbl, 509 cam, headers/Flowmasters with
an H pipe. I'm considering going back to the stock manifolds from the
413, which is out of a 65 Imperial. What do you guys think?
Jeff
