I made my drums removable. took about 15 minutes to relieve the centre hole and the stud holes so they would just slipon and off like the newer ones. No problems. I have twice removed the diff  centre section without pulling the fange of the axle. just unbolted the  backing plates unscrewed the brakelines and popped the emercencey brake cables out of thier frome brackets  after unhooking the centre cable. 
I shall never remove the flanges again unless i need to replace a bearing or outer seal. 
I pulled the whole assembly with a poor mans  axle puller aka  logging chain bolted to the wheel studs. 
Te purists will freak out I know but it is a very easy and practical solution without any problems
