Chrysler Corporation did not put a digit in the VIN for the engine prior to
1966.

Also, over the years the length of the VIN has changed. From 1959 to 1964
(1965 in the US) Chrysler Corporation VINs were ten digits in length.
Chrysler of Canada used an 11-digit VIN in 1965. From 1966 through 1980 the
VIN was 13 digits and from 1981 they have been 17 digits.

But for Chrysler Corporation, all VINs from (and including) 1960 the last
six digits is for the sequential production number with the digit before it
(the 7th digit from the right) the assembly plant and the digit before that
one for the model year.

In the case of your VIN, which is a 10-digit VIN, the model years is 1964.
The eighth digit from the right is a "4", which is for the 1964 model year.
You undoubtedly used a decoder for a 13-digit VIN. In any case, your VIN
3441157242 decodes as :

3 - Plymouth V8
4 - Sport Fury
4 - 1964 model year
1 - Lynch Road assembly plant
157242 - 57,242nd car off the line

To verify which engine your car had when it was built, check the data tag
under the hood. The numbers under the letters "AB" are for the engine. The
number for the transmission is under the "C".

Subject: Vin decode!

Could someone decode a vin number for me? The number is: 3441157242.
It's supposed to be a 1964 Plymouth Sport Fury with a 426 wedge motor.
My decoder shows it as a 1965 Satillite, 4 door. Not sure if it's right or
not.

Thanks,
Bill C.
