I have ask a couple of my racing buddies if they have ever heard of any
issue
like your having. Everyone just looks at me and says, "Really". For sure
there
is something wrong, but I don't know what.

Thanks Tom.  It reminds me of the old Model T vibrating ignition.  Maybe

 This is not normal. The reluctor on the distributor shaft is what tells
the pickup when to signal the ECU to fire. It should not be firing on
it's own. I have seen spark before, by just turning the key on, but not
continuous firing. Buy a cheap ECU to prove the old one is whacked. Tom
