Sounds like he's talking about where he'll be setting the ring gear relative
to the pinion. This is also known as setting the pattern because you check
it by painting 3-4 teeth of the ring gear with Prussian Blue and then
holding tension on the carrier as you turn the yoke enough times to get 1
ring rotation. You can then observe the teeth you painted and see where the
pinion teeth are engaging them. The deeper this mesh, the tighter it is set
and thus the less backlash you have. Personally, I've only known there to be
one right setting and have never heard of doing it two different ways based
on the transmission.
The other "tight" would be how bad it wants to hold those clutches. An
extremely tight rear would skip the outside rear tire along a turn, but I
see even less relationship to the transmission style here.

I've got this guy who is rebuilding a sure grip unit he has, and then
he's going to put it in my 1968 8 3/4 rear. He says he is going to set
it up "loose," like a four speed car, instead of "tight," like an
automatic car. He says that way, I won't tear it apart. For this and
other reasons, I'm starting to think this guy is a little shady. Is he
right? I thought you just rebuilt the clutches and installed it. Isn't
there only one way to do all that properly? Thanks!
