Hi,

I would have the cable checked for adjustment.  If the cable is not 
correctly adjusted for all gear selections you won't get the 
transmission button to stay in and that can mean that the transmission 
may not be in that gear.

>From what I remember, reverse is the position where the cable sticks 
into the tranny the furthest and first is the least.  It is not hard to 
adjust but can take some patience.  Since the car starts, the neutral 
starting switch is engaging so likely the required adjustment is going 
to be very slight one way or the other.
