The easiest way to adjust trans cable, is to back the adjusting wheel off. 
Then have some one push buttonsto see wich one extends the cable the farthest. 
Then have them hold button in, while you insert cable into trans , push until 
it bottoms out, hold it there and turn adjusting wheel until it contacts trans 
case, and install holddown bolt and tighten it. This has worked well for Me 
for 40 plus years.
