Thanks Ken,
   I did bench bleed the m/c.  What do you make of the fact that it doesn't appear to be pumping fluid with each depression of the brake pedal?  It should spout fluid like a fountain if it's working correctly shouldn't it?

  Did you adjust the shoes properly??

  If so, then assuming no leaks, and you rebuilt the MC correctly, they
  have NOT been bled.  If they were bled correctly you would be getting a
  firm pedal.  

  Also, you know most of the time you are supposed to bench bleed the MC
  before it's mounted.

     I've replace all (and I mean all) brake lines, wheel cylinders, and
  rebuilt the master cylinder on my 62 300, but I still get no pedal.
  I've bled them to death, no air, no leaks.  The one thing I notice is
  that when I pump the pedal, only periodically do I get brake fluid
  shooting up from inside the master cylinder.  Am I mistaken but
  shouldn't that be a consistent happening?  It was my first attempt at
  rebuilding a master cylinder but it seemed fairly straight forward.
