Make sure the 78 doesn't have a "lock-up" convertor.  You can identify this 
by removing the convertor and looking at the input shaft.  If it uses a 
lock-up converter, the input shaft will have a smooth machined surface at 
the end, roughly about 5/8" in length.  If it's not a lock-up style, the 
splines will go all the way out to the end of the input shaft.

I would think the late sixties model might be the better one to use.  Coming 
out of a New Yorker, it was probably behind a 440 and may have the better 
clutch drums in it.  That is, some of the drums (forward and direct clutch) 
don't hold as many friction clutch plates as others.  Obviously, with a 451 
in front of it, more is better.
