Neal, I am told you can reduce detonation with Aluminum heads.  You can
get up to a point higher.  Altitude also plays into this as well.  Higher
altitudes can go a bit higher on compression and not ping. One of the
guys local to here says at altitude of 5280 you can get 9.7 and not ping
on 91 octane with iron heads.  Gonna fire my 440 soon which is at 9.6:1. 
We'll see.
