I run the original tapered axles. with a 41 case and a set of 3:91s on a Cone type Posi .
I run the small 318 ujoint and driveshaft but i use the Racing joint to get the strength. It had no greasing holes in it which as you know when they break that is where it happens. So far it has stood all I could give it.
Why the 41 case? Because I had one and I bought the gears out of the back of a customers 1/2 ton in the rain when he was here to pick up a 440 for his killer Duster.
I gave him $20 bucks. He had been told they were no good because they were for a 41 case.( I don't argue anymore i just seize the oppourtunity)
Me I figured they all have the same yoke splines (41 42 89cases)(although there is fine and coarse) so none are stronger in that area and it is the smallest section and therefore probably the weakest link. (It is also OEM for these cars) Also , if you get a chance look at a set of Dana gears for pinion cross section, it might surprise you.
Anyway I try and destroy them on every outing but so far no trouble. In the old days we had no other source but gears from a early sixties slant 6 half tons. (3:91 or 4:10) Never busted one even in our fastest cars. Some are still surviving 25 years plus later so I quit worrying about them and the pinion size thingy. However if I was racing this car with a 5100 converter and Drag slicks I would probably step up to a later housing with good axles and an 89 case just because i hate fixing cars after they are built and also because they are easier to work on.
However i told the MRS when we got this car it wasn't for racing and I have kept my word. (Wasnt I a dummy to say that) However "A Promise made is a debt unpaid " (from The Cremation of Sam Mcgee by Robt Service) and i have kept my word.
Wheels.
I always thought the mag wheels from a Jeep YJ with the large round holes in them would look wonderful on our 62 to 65 Mopars . Never had a chance to get a set .
I went for Cragars and I am pleased with them. Timeless styling.
In the old days we used Dodge Ramcharger wheels for rears and they fit and worked well. (If you wanted a stock looking rim)
